Geocache Description:

Dog Mountain Lookout is on the Stillwater State Forest and is an old obliterated lookout; all that remains are some footings and human consumption artifacts such as wires, cans and metals. There are great views looking north into the Whitefish Range and to the east into Dog Lake. The vegetation on this site is very fragile, so please tread lightly. This hike is about 1.5 miles round-trip.

Driving instructions: coming from Whitefish, take Highway 93 north and turn west after the Olney turnoff to Dog Lake and follow the historic “Fort Steele Trail”. This road is mostly a one-lane, dirt road, so please drive carefully. Turn right off of this main road which will take you to Dog Lake. Soon after taking this junction, you can park on the left at the concrete barricade and proceed hiking on this old abandoned/closed road. Take a very old trail to your left up a draw and as you get to the saddle, you can use your geosense.

The cache is a waterproof cell phone container, about the size of a paperback book. This is moose and bear country – please do not leave any food or fragrance items.
