This is our 5th “Family” planted cache and is is located in one of our favorite hiking areas in the Black Hills. Little Devils Tower summit is a side trail from the main path from Sylvan lake to Harney Peak. The view makes this a favorite cache even though the last part of the trail has a pretty good uphill stretch. The photos from the top (elevation 6971 feet) don’t begin to do justice to the spectacular view. Looking around you can see Harney Peak to the North and is the highest point (7242 feet) in South Dakota. If you look to the NorthWest you can see the backside of Mount Rushmore (no you can’t see their butts – that’s only on the T-shirts in the souvenir shops). To the SouthEast you can’t miss the Cathedral Spire Rock Formations. Stockade and Bismarck lakes are located straight to the South and the town of Custer can be seen to the SouthWest.
The recommended starting point for this cache is at the parking lot at N 43° 50.599' W 103° 33.137' which is along the road between Sylvan lake and Needles Eye. The trail is well marked with the last part being a little bit more uphill so bring water and your favorite hiking stick. Along the hike up you can find a really great vein of Rose Quartz at N 43° 51.094' W 103° 32.317'. The cache is well hidden so please make sure you return it to its hiding spot, as this is a popular hiking trail.
The Cache was a painted (to look like a rock) ammo can with geocaching.com stenciled on it, but latest reports are that it was taken and replaced with some kind of plastic rubbermaid container. Please sign the log and be sure to leave it Well Hidden !
We hope you enjoy this cache!
