Say “Friend” and enter….(Tolkien)
Do you suffer claustrophobia? You fear the dark, nightmares and Orcs?
Then forget it. You are entering MORIA. One of the longest galleries of the island. To walk across it, it will take more or less 1 hour – and your pocket lamp is your only friend.
With 500 m solid rock above you, you do not really need a GPS, isn’t it? That’s why the GPS data show the entrance of the gallery, but not the cache itself. Your only helpers are the spoilers, your instinct and your excellent pocket lamp. The gallery runs from east to west or vice versa, 960 m above sea level. In the middle of the gallery the track makes a S-curve.
As long as you are not in this S- curve, you can see the entrance/exit. I describe it if you come from the east entrance (Central Hidroelectrica – power station) in direction of Caldeirão Inverno/Caldeirão Verde.
In that moment, you enter this “S”-curve, you have to concentrate your attention to a concrete wall on your right side, with a height of ca. 130 cm. You will find there our geocaching sign (Spoiler 1). On the other side runs the levada. On the top of this wall are a lots of stones. Search directly above the sign within this stones. The cache is hidden behind these stones. If you come from direction of the levada Caldeirão Inverno/Caldeirão Verde it’s the other way round. You have to concentrate on your left side and if you can see the tunnel exit in the far, you went too far. Then go back as described above. Good luck and full batteries in your pocket lamp – and beware of the Orcs.
On the walk between Caldeirão Verde and Caldeirão Inverno you have to be absolutely free from giddiness/vertigo. You are walking on the levada wall along the abyss. In April 2009 a person fell 200 m down and died.
Once you are back in sun light you can say:
Va n pyrnintr pbirerq jvgu fznyy benatr fgbarf.
Ahzn sraqn, pboregn pbz crqevaunf.
