Geocache Description:

This journey takes you near the resting place of Captain Zenas Dyer (1788-1865). He served as a captain in the militia. He was a hotel proprietor and heavily involved in the business of distilling cider brandy. His farm had a cider mill and his basement was reportedly filled with barrels of cider brandy. Had you visited his home, hospitality standards of the day may have quenched your thirst with a quart or more of cider brandy.

He and his son, Daniel, broke ground on the construction of the Collins Company in Collinsville. The Canton Historical Museum, located at 11 Front St., has a very large collection of the tools manufactured at the Collins Company.

The sign was created by William Rice for Dyer's Inn once located on Albany Turnpike in Canton. It dates to circa 1823. The beehive and plow were traditional symbols of agriculture. "Hold or Drive" is an old-fashioned saying from the maxim "He that by the Plow would thrive, himself must either hold or drive."

The cache is within 25 feet of ground zero. There is NO need to move or touch any rocks or stones. As always, enjoy the adventure.
