Glenlochar Barrage
This cache is one of a series around Loch Ken which provides
either a pleasant circular drive or cycle around the loch. You
might like to consider the
Loch Ken Circular (multi-cache) if you are
doing the series of six. This cache is one of the multi-cache
stages.
The idea of the Galloway Hydro Electric Scheme, of which Loch
Ken / River Dee is part, was conceived by three local men, Major
Wellwood Maxwell, Captain Scott Elliot and Colonel William
McLellan.
After much perseverance the proposals were passed by Parliament
in 1929, construction began in 1931 with the scheme fully
operational by 1936. Colonel William McLellan the civil engineer
involved in the project died in 1934 before the scheme was
complete. The construction work however was well advanced and its
success assured. The scheme consists of 6 power stations, 7
reservoirs, 9 dams/barrages and a combination of 6 tunnels and
aqueducts.
