Ortodoksinen uskonto levisi itäiseen Suomeen Novgorodista jo 12. vuosisadalla. 1940-luvulle saakka toiminta painottuikin Karjalaan, jossa valtaosa seurakunnista sijaitsi.
Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen, Karjalan ja Petsamon evakkojen jälleenasuttamisen myötä, uusia seurakuntia perustettiin ja kirkkoja rakennettiin ympäri maata.
Lapin seurakunta perustettiin v. 1950 ja siihen kuuluu lähes koko Lapin lääni. Seurakunnan alueella on neljä kirkkoa. Rovaniemen kirkko rakennettiin vuonna 1956 ja se on peruskorjattu 1997.
The Orthodox Christian faith spread to Eastern Finland from Novgorod in the 12th century. Until 1940´s the focus of the activity was in Karelia, where the majority of the parishes were. After the 2nd World War, with the resettlement of the population of the ceded territories (Karelia and Pechenga), many new churches were built around the country.
The Orthodox parish of Lapland was created in 1950, and it consists of almost the whole Lapland. There is four Orthodox churches in Lapland area. Rovaniemi church was built 1956 and renovated 1997.
