In 1916 cartoonist Frank O. King created the first nationally distributed Sunday comics, and in 1919 he began a comic strip called "Gasoline Alley." Featuring Walt Wallet, the new strip struggled until 1921 when King introduced a new character, "Skeezix." One morning Walt opened his door and found little Skeezix on the door step. Walt and his wife, Phyllis Rumpus Blossom, adopted the little foundling, and readers of Gasoline Alley were able to enjoy watching the little fellah grow over the next several years.
