This is a very popular hike in this area. During wildflower season from mid July to Aug you will find amazing flowers and even better views. Due to the fact that you drive for most of your altitude gain, you will find an excellent alpine experience awaits with only an easy hike involved.
The cache is hidden a short distance off the trail, follow your GPS at the trail intersection. Beware of the muggles below because the cache is located above the trail. Since you are only half way to the Lookout, don’t turn back now! The 360 degree views from the lookout are well worth the walk!
Our grandfather led us as kids up this trail many times and we are happy to now have our kids enjoy this great spot!
There are a few ways to reach this cache...
The recommended or easiest would be to drive to the Idaho Lookout Parking Area. The trail from there is clearly marked and in very good condition. We have known people to be afraid of this trail due to a fear of heights, you will get the “on top of the world feeling”, but this is a very well maintained and safe trail all the way to the summit.
Another route would involve hiking the Wakefield Trail up from the Silverton side of the peak to the Idaho Lookout Parking Area.
Driving instructions - - From HWY 6 exit towards Sandon, the distance to the Parking Area is 17 km / 10 mi. You will be on single lane logging roads & 4WD is recommended, but you will see many good 2WD’s making it easily to the parking area. Please be very careful, especially on the weekends in late July & Aug. The Idaho Peak Trail is a very popular wildflower & hiking spot in this area.
