Geocache Description:

Located in the Hawkins Mill Pond Park. Park in one of the parking areas, it will be a few minutes walk.

Ellingson Mill was the first sawmill in Hawkins, built in 1898 by C.P. Crosby of Rhinelander, it was purchased by C.K. Ellingson in 1902. The mill burned in July , 1903, but was rebuilt along with a planing mill. The mill changed hands in 1923 when the Ogema Lumber Co. bought it. They operated it for four years. The mill was dismantled by 1930. Bissell Lumber Co. built a mill on the approximate site in 1937, and it was dismantled in 1944. Remnants of the mill remain within the park. A white pine log is displayed at the corner of U.S. Highway 8 and Main St. as a reminder of Hawkins past.
