Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash at the church. Can be included with the 'History of Great Baddow' cache GC1G5HW.

A church in Gt. Baddow first appears in the records in 1172. The present church was erected on the site of the former church. Its main walls are made of flint-rubble with fragments of roman brick and tile. These strongly built walls are 13th century work.

There have been many alterations to the building over the years. The splendid exterior is thanks chiefly to the early Tudor brick clerestory with its stepped battlements. There is a Square Tower which houses 8 bells.

Inside, the Jacobean pulpit, which is from the early 17th century, is said to be the best in the county with its elusive canopy, its pinnacles and pendants, the whole is beautifully carved.

It's well worth a look inside the chuch if you have time.

If anybody would like to expand on this series please do so. Could you please let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
