Geocache Description:

St. Eriks Grotta

[ENG] Here was Marstrand population hidden under siege of Tordenskiolds 1719. Amiral Tordenskiold did during the Great Northern War a very well-known and feared name, but he had never enjoyed any length of time of their victories. On 1 november 1720, the day of Carlsten Fortress was returned to Sweden, he was killed in a duel with the Swedish Colonel Jakob Axel Staël von Holstein, after accusing him of being a blackleg.

St. Eriks cave actually consists of two caves. The top cave is called St. Erik. Here are the "Pulpit", a rock where the priest gave his sermons during the siege. The lowest cave is called "Mrs Arvid son's bedroom". Here she gave birth to a son in the siege which became one of the founders of the East India company in Gothenburg. It has also been found tools from the Stone Age, indicating that this has been habitat for a long time. The cave is naturally formed with an opening of approximately 10 m wide and 3 m high.
