Geocache Description:


Onyang Hot Springs


A hot spring is a spring that is produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater from the earth's crust.  The water flows up the sulfur mountain thrust fault and emerges at the surface.  At Onyang hot springs the temperature of the alkali water is at around 57C°/135°F.  It has a high concentration of radium.  Some of the mineral contents are Radium, Bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate and ______.  The geographical features comprise of a single biotite and hornblende granite.

The coordinates of N36° 46.980 - E126° 59.980 will lead you to the parking lot in the park.  You do not need to pay the entrance fee in order to study the area and complete the above tasks.  If you decide to dip in, the entrance fee is about 5000 Won equals to about 5 US Dollars. The park is opened 7 days a week between 6AM till 10PM.

Some other interesting information about these hot springs;  Onyang hot springs is the oldest in Korea of which mention can be traced back 1300 years ago in historical records of the Baekje or Unfied Shill dynasty. Onyang was called Onsu-gun meaning hot spring town during the Koryo period, it can be found that Onyang has been a hot spring resort for more than 600 years. Onyang hot springs came to be famous as the kings Chosun dynasty to include Sejong and  Sejo paid visits many times despite of the great inconvenience the royal visits caused. 

Local folklore claims skin beautification and treatment for blood vessel hardening, neuralgia, women's disease, digestive disorder, and anemia..
