I've always wanted to place a low maintenance, only gets found once in a blue moon, mountain-top cache. What better spot than the top of 9003' high New Pass Peak? This cache can also give you either page 37 or page 45 of the Nevada Delorme Challenge.
Thanks to info provided by some recent finders of this cache, I am adding the following important statement:
HEY!!...HEY, YOU!!! ...YES, YOU, POTENTIAL SEEKER OF THIS CACHE!!! PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!!!
Thank you! Now, read the next line very carefully...
THIS CACHE IS AN AMMO CAN!!! It is NOT the glass jar in the rock cairn!
Got that? Ammo Can? NOT a glass jar? Good! Now we can proceed...
If you choose the correct route to this one, it's amazingly good for a Nevada mountain range dirt road...the nearby cell towers probably have a lot to do with that. There are a few stretches where 4-wheel drive might come in handy...I made it to the top in 2WD, but used low range on the way back down to save my brakes. I definitely wouldn't try this one if there's been any recent measurable precipitation in the area (the weekend we placed this cache, we came down off the mountain after a rainstorm...made for an incredible sunrise the morning before the storm, but the drive out the next day was interesting to say the least). If the weather's been dry, you'll have some "magnetic bug dust" to contend with in a few spots. Nice scenery on the drive in, and great views in all directions from the top.
Now, here's where the glass jar comes into play...
There is also a summit log hidden in the rock cairn near the cache...be sure to sign it while you're up there.
