Geocache Description:

Chatham Light Chatham Light, constructed in 1877 of cast iron, was built to replace two brick lighthouses claimed by the sea. Chatham Light is an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation and is open to the public on certain open house dates in the summer and fall (view schedule at http://www.lighthouse.cc/chatham/ ) Chatham Light overlooks Chatham Lighthouse Beach and from the parking area cliff top visitors can survey the “Chatham Break”, a mile-wide gap in the barrier beach that was once connected to the mainland at Nauset Beach in Orleans. The break occurred in January of 1987 during a powerful nor’easter and the ocean channel continues to grow and further separate the north part of Nauset Beach from what is now called South Beach. South Beach, in turn, has curved and connected to the Chatham mainland, expanding the beach for swimming, fishing, and walking. Even though the seascape is fragile and changes with every current, tide and wind the view of “Chatham Break” is great any day on the Cape.
