O MUSEU - M26 Traditional Geocache

A construção da Torre de S. Sebastião, actual Museu-Biblioteca Condes de Castro Guimarães, data do início do século XX e foi mandada edificar pelo aristocrata Jorge O'Neil. Obra notável da arquitectura romântica, a Torre de S. Sebastião fascina pela mistura de estilos e por um envolvente misticismo que faz imaginar histórias de outros tempos...

Em 1910, o palácio foi vendido aos Condes de Castro Guimarães que, após procederem a algumas alterações, passaram a habitá-lo grande parte do ano. O bom gosto do casal reflectiu-se na aquisição de peças de arte e mobiliário representativos de várias épocas, assim como o seu interesse pela cultura se fez sentir com a compra de dois dos elementos mais significativos do acervo do actual Museu: um órgão neo-gótico, construído de encomenda para o Conde e a valiosa Crónica de D. Afonso Henriques, de Duarte Galvão.

Os Condes usufruíram pouco tempo deste magnífico palácio. Quando faleceu, em 1927, o Conde deixou, em testamento, a casa e propriedade ao Município de Cascais, para que nelas fosse constituída uma Casa-Museu e Jardim Público.

O Museu-Biblioteca Condes de Castro Guimarães foi oficialmente inaugurado a 12 de Julho de 1931, tendo sido durante largos anos o único existente no concelho de Cascais.

In 1910, the palace was sold to the Counts of Castro Guimarães that after making some changes, it came to inhabit much of the year. The taste of the couple reflected in the purchase of furniture and works of art representative of different eras, as well as his interest in culture was felt with the purchase of two of the most significant achievements of the current museum, a neo-organ Gothic, built in order for the count and valuable Crónica de D. Afonso Henriques in Duarte Galvão.

Counts received the short time of this magnificent palace. When he died, in 1927 the Count left in wills, the house and property to the city of Cascais, for which they were constituted a House-Museum and Public Garden.

The Museum-Library Condes de Castro Guimarães was officially inaugurated on 12 July 1931, and was for years the only one in the municipality of Cascais.
