Levada Da Rocha Vermelha
Do this walk when you are used to walk on the levada-walls of Madeira. Independent which way you choose, this is not an easy hike.
The harder way is to start in Rabaçal and descend to the “Levada da Rocha Vermelha”. Your extra reward is two additional caches of my team-friends “macnetz” and “mabinta”. You have to conquer abysses, waterfalls, climbs through canyons –slippery and dangerous, and a stone-stairway which seems to be without an end. At the origin of the levada, you will find the cache.
To save you to walk the whole way back, you can leave the levada at N 32° 47.266 W 017° 08.394 and climb up to the street which leads from Paúl da Serra to Fanal.
And this is the other possibility for those, who want to have it a little bit easier (but only a little bit). You have to climb down to the levada and up. Have a good time! You start at N 32°47.501 W 017° 07.736, pass a rotten gate N 32° 47.234 W 017° 08.225 and climb, climb, climb ………
The cache box was labelled “Tanto longe”, but this is not perfect Portuguese. That’s why the cache name is correct “Muito Longe” which means “very far away”. You walk on the mountains of Madeira. Take an anorak, to eat and to drink with you! Do not walk this levada if it’s too foggy, rainy or stormy. We don’t want to loose cachers here. A cell phone (handy) might be helpful in case of problems (call 112).
