I was driving down the road the other day when I saw a country code sticker on a vehicle - you know the ovals with country abbreviations in them - and I remembered when I was traveling abroad the fun I had trying to figure out where vehicles were from by looking at these stickers. By the time you finish solving this one, you will know more about country codes that your average counter-person at the DMV!
I spent some time in Germany and in the Middle East and even had a few layovers in Africa. I remember stickers from a few of these trips including one from American Somoa to Lybia, during which I saw stickers from Somolia to Ethiopia at the airport. I spotted them from as far away as Norway all the way to the U.S. Minor Islands on my return flight from neighboring Tonga back to Algeria.
The tricky part of interpreting the abbreviations is when the code doesn't match the country name like you'd think it would. Just as the term "for example", is abbreviated "e.g" because it derives from the Latin translation, "exempli gratia". But sometimes it's a direct abbreviation and the difference is obvious, "i.e.," (that is) a term derived from the same phrase in a different language like the german, "zum beispiel", which is abbreviated "z.b." just like you'd expect it to be.
