Original container went missing in fall 2009.
Replaced with a nano in an ever so slightly different spot on Oct.
22, 2009.
BYOP! This cache is located along the beautiful Mighty Mississippi
in Hastings, MN. If you look at the coords on a map it might look
like this cache is in the water, but fear not, it's actually
wheelchair accessible. On nice days when there's a lot of people on
the nearby trail, stealth may be required.
The overlook is a redeveloped fueling and fire suppression station
that was built approximately 50 years ago for use by barges. The
Flint Hills Nature Preserve located adjacent to the river at this
location used to have several huge fuel storage tanks underground,
but those were removed before the land was restored to a
prairie.
The overlook was in disrepair as recently as spring 2008, but the
city of Hastings recently fixed it up and turned it into a viewing
platform.
Thanks to an almost $4,000 donation from the Hastings Rotary Club,
the overlook has a free binocular viewer that people can use. Bald
eagles are a common sight year round in the big trees along the
river here.
Note: Please be safe out there, you don't have to do any climbing
around the outside of the structure to get to this cache. Park
hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
To get to the overlook, park at the Mississippi River public boat
launch on Lock and Dam Road and walk on the path adjacent to the
river toward Lock and Dam 2.
