Prior to project construction, storm water from a 128-acre residential area drained untreated into a pristine natural area in Woodbury, called Tamarack Swamp. This rare metro-area ecosystem showed signs of damage from high nutrient loadings in run-off draining into it. The purpose of this project is to remove an estimated 60% of the total phosphorous (TP) load from the storm water draining through it prior to discharging into Tamarack Swamp. The removal of this phosphorous load is expected to have a positive long-term effect on Tamarack Swamp, the primary purpose of this project. The Valley Creek Road Storm Water Treatment System features a series of infiltration basins with check dams, a flow splitter with an infiltration basin, and an extended detention pond and filtration system. In addition, this project included the stabilization of an eroded gully along the flow path to Tamarack Swamp. These basins are located on the south side of Valley Creek Road between Tower Drive and Bielenberg Dr.
