1973 öppnade Volvo sin provbana i Hällered. Strax intill provbanan ligger Skäresjön som tack vare sitt rena och fina vatten förser provbanan med dricksvatten. Av ortsbefolkningen kallas därför sjön för ”Volvosjön”. Här finns det också en liten badstrand som är mycket populär bland folket i trakten. Provbanan är strängt förbjudet område för vanligt folk och är omgärdad av ett 10 km långt stängsel som är under ständig bevakning. Innanför stängslet finns det flera toppmoderna verkstäder för både personbilar och lastbilar och ett bansystem med några av världens tuffaste vägar. Huvudbanan är en 6,2 km lång oval och fungerar som en oändlig 4-filig motorväg. Lutningen i kurvorna gör att man kan köra upp till 200km/tim utan sidokrafter på bilen. På provbanan provas personbilar, lastbilar och bussar dygnet runt med avseende på livslängd, komfort, prestanda, tillförlitlighet och säkerhet.

The Volvo lake
1973 Volvo opened its proving ground at Hällered. Next to the proving ground the lake Skäresjön is located which, thanks to its nice and clear water, provides the proving ground with drinking water. By the local people the lake is therefore called” the Volvo lake”. There is also a little bathing beach here which is very popular amongst the locals. The proving ground is strictly forbidden area for ordinary people and is surrounded by a 10 km constant guarded fence. Inside the fence there are several top modern workshops for cars and trucks and a track system that consist of some of the world toughest roads. The main track is a 6,2 km long oval and works as an endless 4-lane motorway. The curve gradient allow speeds up to 200km/h without side forces on the car. On the proving ground cars, trucks and buses are tested 24 hours a day regarding endurance, comfort, performance, reliability and safety.

You don’t have to take any notice to the road sign “closed to all vehicles in both directions” on the way to step 2. For Volvo it is ok to pass the sign when driving to the lake.
