Geocache Description:

(English Version)

The Rosaleda (Retiro)

Description: The idea of the Rose Garden was born in 1915 by a decree of the mayor, Carlos Prats, and the director of parks and gardens in the city of Madrid, Cecilio Rodriguez. They were inspired by the rose garden of Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris created by Jean-Nicolas Forestier.

The location was chosen around the greenhouse Marqués de Salamanca. The greenhouse vanished during the civil war. In front of it there was an artificial lake, which was used for ice-skating after the lake was frozen in winter.

The design of the garden is based on an elliptical shape, bordered by a hedge of arizonica(cypress). There were a large variety of roses from the most famous gardens in Europe. After the garden was completely destroyed in the civil war in 1941, people planted about 4000 new rose bushes. But the beauty of the roses couldn´t hide the lack of a systematic arrangement in the garden. To remedy this situation a new rose garden was opened in Parque del Oeste in Madrid on 24 May 1956, which was built under a strict botanical approach. Every year there is now a rose competition.

OPENING TIMES:

SPRING – SUMMER: 10 – 20 H

AUTUMN – WINTER: 10 – 18 H

The coordinates above are not the hiding place. They are only an indication of an entrance into the park.
