Kalnamuiža, Smiltene

The manor complex (Kalnamuiža) in Smiltene is located on the shores of Vidusezers (middlelake). The manor house was built from 1767 till 1771. At this time the governor-general of Vidzeme G. Braun was the manor's owner. Later it was sold to a merchant of Riga called Bandavs. In 1893 the mother of Prince Paul Livens bought the manor an gave it to her son. Thus began the period under the reign of Paul Livens, in which Smiltene greatly developed. There are several buildings of the manor Kalnamuiža preserved till ourdays: the manciple house, a hunting lodge, a stable, a hopper, a barn and the ruins of the castle of the Teutonic Order with a small cheese house which was built in 1763. In 1922 the Latvian government took over the estate and established a school for agriculture. Until today the "Smiltenes Tehnikums" administrates the complex. Here learn young people from allover Latvia.
