Staciašlaitis, aukštas Dovilu piliakalnis, vadinamas Pilales kalnu, datuojamas I tukst. - XIII a. Cia stovejusi Dovilu pilis, pamineta 1304 m. Taip pat minima, kad piliakalnyje buve randama angliu, buves šulinys. Senoveje buvo su gilia duobe, kurios dugno ilga kartimi negalejo pasiekti. I piliakalni ejes urvas su geležinem durim. Pasak padavimo, cia ir dabar klaidžioja vaiduokliai - trys kunigaikštytes ir žirgas be galvos.
Savo varda Dovilai gave iš garbingo išmintingo šio krašto valdovo Dovilo, Gedimino giminaicio. Pats Gediminas su didele kariuomene Dovilo pili ir karžygius aplanke, prieš eidamas kautis su kryžeivom. O pilis paskui kiaurai žeme nugrimzdusi... Liko tik šventi ažuolai, sodinti Perkunui.

High and steep Dovilai hill fort, also known as Pilale mountain, dates back to X-XIII centuries. There used to be a castle, which first mentioned in 1304. Some time ago coal and well could be found in a hill fort. In antient times, there was a deep pit in the middle of a hill, and it’s bottom could not be reached even by a long wooden pole. Hill fort had a cave in it, and entrance to it was closed with iron door. According the legend, there are still some gosts wandering – three princesses and horse without a head….
Dovilai village got it’s name from honorable and wise lord Dovilas, who was relative of Gediminas, ancient Lithuanian duke. Legend tells, that Gediminas and hi army visited Dovilai castle before a battle with Teutonic knights. After that the castle disappeared from the surface, only holy oaks were still there, planted for the pagan god Perkunas…
