Geocache Description:

Gaspar Fructuoso

‘Lagoa’ was first populated after the discovery of São Miguel island. The island’s first inhabitants established in the areas which originated the villages of ‘Lagoa’ and ‘Água de Pau’. ‘Lagoa’ was chosen due to its sheltered bay, quickly becoming a prime point for embarking and disembarking. It was in the local ‘Porto dos Carneiros’ (port of the lambs) that cattle, including lambs, were first released in the island. “The village of Lagoa, so called due to the presence, in front of the main church door, of a reef and a port, through which boats could enter. In former times fishing took place, the cattle could drink, and some people swam as a hobby (…)” - Gaspar Fructuoso, Azorean historian
