Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Chico Cache Hunt Challenge

This is a multicache adventure with five caches and numerous stops along the way, highlighting important events in the history of Chico, CA and featuring a number of prominent Chico landmarks and notable locations. It will test not only your ability to locate hidden caches by their coordinates and clues provided, but also your ability to solve puzzles, codes and riddles. You’ll also have to do a little (easy) research about the history of our fair city, and you will need to have just a little bit of familiarity with it, or know someone who does. I wish I could say there was a great treasure at the end of the trail, but the satisfaction of completing the challenge will have to do. We have picked a location for the final cache that we think is a reward all by itself. There is a small prize in the last cache of the sequence for the FTF.

As special thanks to ka6aru (Jim) who graciously agreed to let us retool his "The Great Railcar" cache as the first stop in our series. Please visit his original listing (visit link) for some additional background info on the site. If you happen to have logged Jim's cache, be advised, while ours is at very nearly the same coordinates, it isn't hiddden in the same place.

Each cache features a Magic Number and detailed instructions for finding the next cache. The Magic Numbers are CRITICAL. They serve two purposes: First, you'll need them to calculate coordinates later in the game. This is to ensure that no one who happens to stumble across one of the caches by happenstance can complete the remaining steps in the challenge. Second, they give you access to our website page for the cache you've just found, which will save you from having to copy down all the instructions for the next step. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't steal the info from the caches. If you want to proceed to the next step before returning to your computer, copy down the instructions and leave the cache as you found it.

Once you find a cache, you can access the web page for that cache at:

h t t p://

where you would substitute the Magic Number for the xxxx. (Note: the number of digits in the Magic Numbers varies from as few as two to as many six. Do not enter leading zeros. If its a two digit number, just type those two digits after the '/' and then '.htm')

You can also use the web site to confirm any calculated coordinates before you head out in search of the next destination. Enter the coordinates in place of the xxxx above in the format "NDDMMmmmWDDDMMmmm". You must use EXACTLY this format. If you get a Page-Not-Found error, either you've calculated the coordinates wrong, or entered them in the wrong format.

Finally, in the hunt for the third cache, you will need to know the "Magic Moment". The Magic Moment is a particular time of day at which the puzzle can be solved. Arrive at the site too early and you'll just have to wait, but arrive too late, and you'll have missed it! The Magic Moment varies with the day of the year as follows:

1 - Calculate the Day of the Year (Jan 1 = 1, Feb 1 = 32, etc.)
2 - Between the first of the year and the fifteenth of June:
Start with Day of Year (DOY)
Multiply by -0.0063
Add 1
Mulitply by DOY
Multiply by 0.0023
Add 1
Multiply by DOY again
Muliply by 1.13
Add 44

After the fifteenth of June:
Start with Day of Year (DOY)
Multiply by -0.001276
Add 1
Mulitply by DOY
Multiply by -.004257
Add 1
Multiply by DOY again
Muliply by 15.99
Subtract 947
3 - Round the result to the nearest whole number. The Magic Moment is exactly this many minutes after 7:00AM (8:00AM if daylight savings time is in effect).

That's about all the preliminary info you should need. It all begins with a hidden cache located at the coordinates listed above. Find it, sign the log and follow the instructions to continue the adventure. Happy Hunting.

Oh yeah. . . The clue for the first stash once you arrive at the coordinates:

"Spin me left or ‘round to the right.
I’ll let go or hold ‘er tight!
Stand and face me. Now be discreet, see?
Search around to the left of your left knee"

Happy Hunting...
