How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
Located on Matiu Somes Island, take the East by West ferry. This trail gives you the chance to explore the island's history and wildlife. From the Whare Kiore (Rat House), clues will direct you to Cache 1 and there to the rest of the trail. Please let the ranger know that you are geocaching so that they can point you in the right direction. DUE TO NESTING OYSTER CATCHERS, CACHE 1 IS GENERALLY NOT ACCESSIBLE FROM LATE SEPTEMBER, FOR 2-3 MONTHS. START LOOKING FOR CACHE 2.
Department of Conservation invite you to get involved in Conservation Week.
Studies show spending time in nature improves physical and mental health and wellbeing. Get into nature this Conservation Week and experience it for yourself.

Matiu/Somes Island is a protected scientific and historic reserve managed by the Department. Visitors are asked to follow all instructions given by the DOC ranger on arrival to the island. The island is pest free and a haven for native wildlife and plants. Caches are located on walking tracks and farmland so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
All visitors must check their bags for unwanted pests in the Whare Kiore/quarantine building which is located next to the main wharf.
Entry to Mokopuna and Makaro Island is by permit only - no landing.
Pets are not permitted on the islands.
Due to fire hazards and limited water supply, fires are not allowed and smoking is restricted to the main wharf.
The island may be closed to visitors at times of extreme fire danger. If you discover a fire, call 111 and go immediately to the wharf.
Note these co-ordinates take you to the location of the clues to the first or second cache. Please let the ranger know that you are geocaching so that they can point you in the right direction.
This multi cache gives you the opportunity to enjoy a trip around the island, visit some historic highlights and read about quirky, little known facts about Matiu/Somes.
These caches are not intended for swaps.
