Not far from the posted
coordinates is a bridge that was dedicated to one of West Baden
Springs' heros, Joe Louis. Louis, who was the heavy weight
boxing champion of the world for 12 years, trained at the nearby
Waddy Hotel. The Waddy, which burnt down in 1951, was located
where the Dixie Garage and Artie Smith's cabin now stand.
Artie "Smitty" Smith, first came to the area as part of Joe Louis'
entourage. He liked the area so much that he ended up
staying, eventually buying the Waddy Hotel where Louis had trained.
Smith's cabin is on the other end of the bridge from where the
cache is located.
Also nearby is the baseball field where many great players of the
early 1900's played. The West Baden Sprudels which was made
up of hotel employees would play visiting teams from the Negro
Leagues and from other professional baseball teams that were
training in the Valley.
