Geocache Description:

The last widespread ice age sheet to cover most of Scotland, the late Devensian Ice Sheet, existed between about 27.000 and 13.500 years ago.

Geologists identify erratics by studying the rocks surrounding the position of the erratic and the composition of the erratic itself. A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests. "Erratics" take their name from the latin word "erratum" english: fault, error, mistake, and are carried by glacial ice, often over distances of hundreds of kilometers. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders.

Samson's Putting Stone sits precariously on Bochastle Hill.

The glacial irratic boulder is schist suggesting it came from the near mountains of Scotland. The boulder has been smoothed and rounded by the pressure and movement of the glacial ice whilst in motion. The stone was formerly situated in the Glen Dochart region.

An older explanation: Local tradition has it that this stone came to be here as a result of a putting competition between a family of giants. The winner of the competition was Samson who lived on Ben Ledi.
