THE HOLY HILL - BASALT

The Holy Hill consists of basalt from the tertiary period which broke through older layers of (A) and (B). Hard basalt was more resistant to erosion than other neigbouring rocks and so it recently makes a significant massif
above the river Ohre. It makes severak rocky outcrops in the hillside along the path in which you can see column separation of the rock. It arised from solidifying of liquid molten mass. The process goes as follows: During the sequential
solidifying from the surface to the core of the molten mass, the rock reduces its also obvious that basalt solified in different conditions and several phases because the columns are irregular and differ in size (from huge columns in
diameter of (C) centimetres to narrow ones in diameter of only a few centimeters).
Basalt is the most often occured volcanic rock, it has grey-black basic mass, consisting of soda-lime feldspar and pyroxen, sometimes of olivine, hornblende and biotite. All the rocks mentioned above can make so called „vyrostlice“
(significantly digger crystals surrounded by fine-grained basic mass).
