Ammo can in the remains of an auxillary building for the lookout. Summit elev. 5715 ft with 700 ft gain from the parking area.
There used to be fire lookout towers throughout the mountains with fire watchers looking for the first signs of forest fires. This cache is placed near the site of one such lookout, a cupola cabin built in 1923; the cabin having long ago been removed.
The cache is placed in the remains of what was once an important auxillary building to the lookout tower. The building is gone but a few boards remain.
To reach this cache take Forest Service road 70 to 7030 and then to 7036. While on 7036 find the turn to the right shortly past the GCYR39 cache to reach the Windy Gap parking area. You will need a vehicle with high ground clearance for the last half of this final road or you can park at a secondary parking area and walk to the Gap.
From the Gap I took the Crest trail about a half mile South to the West ridge, then bushwhacked to the summit. There is probably a better way.
