A cache at the old Fort overlooking Port Louis
Fort Adelaide, aslo known as La Citadelle, was built by the British in 1835-1840. The location on the hill was chosen as it overlooks the city and the idea was that from the fort the authorities would be alert to any civil unrest. With the abolition of slavery which was enforced in 1835, this was thought to be a very real possibility. Although the Fort is more widely referred to as La Citadelle, it was officially named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV.
It is only a short walk from the city centre and should take no longer than half an hour at the most. There are stunning views all around, so this should make for a worthwhile detour!
