The cache invites you to the top the Mud Hill, an isolated block beside the town of Gyöngyös in front of the popular Middle-Mátra mountains. The shape of the hill is quite distinctive with the three summits called Visonta, Cseplye and Sár-hegy (Mud Hill).
Walking on the southern slopes of the hill gives you a spectacular view to the nearby area, the town of Gyöngyös and a bit farther the Hungarian Lowlands (Alföld). There is also a wide variety of plants that favor the special climate at the southern side. Several species of butterflies, birds and rodents found here a living-space. This rich flora and fauna is protected since 1975 when the terrain became a nature conservation area. A 12-stage study trail from Mátrafüred to Gyöngyös helps to better understand this world.
The yellow marked pathway together with the study trail starts beside the cemetery of Gyöngyös (along the national road Nr.24). There is a free parking area (Waypoint P1) where you can leave your car. It is about a 2.5 km walk up to the cache. Please do not leave the pathway in the protected area.
The other option is coming from the north. Parking area is in front of an electronic factory (Waypoint P2). There are unmarked forest roads you can take. Coming by bike navigate first to the barrier (Waypoint Barrier) then take the paved road upwards.
A good option for a longer trip to walk through the complete study trail from Gyöngyös to Mátrafüred (or vice versa) and take the little train back to the starting point. You can check the timetable here.
Happy caching! :)
