Neptune - The Mystic
How Geocaching Works

A simple cache in the centre of Cheltenham, originally placed by The Crawlers, this cache has been adopted by me.
Please replace in the same position on the hiding structure as you find the cache. Thank you.
Gustav Holst was born and educated in Cheltenham, and is one of the town's most famous sons. His birthplace and childhood home at 4 Clarence Road became a museum to his life in 1974, and is well worth a visit.
This cache marks Neptune, the Mystic, part of one of what is perhaps his most famous composition, The Planet Suite, written during the early years of the Fist World War, and reflects Holst's interest in astrology.
The suite is composed of seven movements, one for each of the planet's in the solar system (Earth is excluded, and Pluto wasn't known when the suite was composed).
The fountain was designed by Joseph Hall, and constructed by R.L. Boulton and Sons in 1892-3. The fountain draws water from the River Chelt, which flows below the fountain through a large culvert taking the river through the town centre, and emerges in Sandford Park.
