Geocache Description:

BULLDOG SPIRIT

This cache is in memory of Marsh Fork High School, which stood at this site for many decades.

Marsh Fork High School was originally known as Montcoal High School. Construction on a two-classroom school was started in 1925, and it graduated its first class of seven students in 1930.

Over the next few years, more classrooms were added to the building. In 1932, nearby Mt. View High School was closed and its students were sent to Montcoal. It was at this time that the school became known as Marsh Fork. Twenty-two students graduated that year.

In 1943 the original school building was destroyed by fire and a brand new building took its place the following year. This new building was definitely one that the community could be proud of. It contained all the modern conveniences and was hailed as "one of the most modern educational plants in the state." This building would graduate many residents of the Marsh Fork area over the next 60 years.

The first football uniforms were given to the school by West Virginia Wesleyan College, whose colors were Orange and Black. The Bulldog was picked as a mascot due to the fact that the first football coach had a pet bulldog that the players were fond of. The Bulldog, along with the colors of Orange and Black would stay with the school for the remainder of its existence.

Sadly, the decision was made to shut Marsh Fork down in 2003 and send all future students to nearby Liberty High School. Marsh Fork saw its last senior class graduate in June of that year. The building, which had bustled with activity and served as the community focal point for as long as anyone could remember, sat vacant for a couple of years. Then, early one Sunday morning, on December 18, 2005, a fire ripped through the vacant building. All that is left now is an empty field and a few memories.

In tribute to the memory of Marsh Fork High School, I have placed this cache. Parking is available a few feet from ground zero. There is no need to go onto the property to find the cache. Stealth may need to be exercised during certain times of the day. Container is too small for writing implements, so please bring your own pen.

Congratulations to Handyman & Fam on the FTF!
