Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to our caching buddy Paleolith. It is just a short hike from the trailhead.

I placed this cache as a small tribute to fellow trail worker and geocaching buddy, Paleolith. Paleolith is a contractor which works for a local firm, but lives in Florida. For several years he traveled to California for two or three weeks at a time then went home to Florida for a few days. About two years ago he started to volunteer with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council trail maintenance crews every Saturday. It wasn't long before Big Eagle and I introduced Paleolith to geocaching. So then he was a tireless trail worker AND an avid geocacher. Now Paleolith's employer has told him he will be working from home (in Florida) and not traveling to California anymore. We will miss him terribly. In the last two years, he has contributed hundreds of hours of work maintaining local trails and he has hidden some great caches. Two of the most challenging and fun caches I have found are Paleolith's Santa Monica Mtns History Adventure (GC18DXW) and Spinal Tap (GC1C4Y4).

Thank you Paleolith, for all your work and the fun caches.

This cache is a small 2" X 3" container hidden near the trail. It is not near enough to the Backbone Trail (about 400 feet) to be added to the Backbone Trail Bookmark list but it is close. If you are hiking the BBT, you might want to grab this one too. You don't need to bushwhack to it. There is a good trail right to the cache. At the Backbone Trail sign at the switchback, follow the well defined use trail to the east. If you are hiking up from Old Topanga Road, this will be the first switchback with a BBT sign. If you are hiking downhill, in an easterly direction, this will be the second switchback with a BBT sign you will encounter. You will find the cache in a nice shady spot on the edge of a small meadow.
