Geocache Description:

This is a family-friendly puzzle cache taking you round the lovely market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. The co-ordinates are for the town centre and not the cache. There’s a car-park in the town centre and also free parking at the Devils Bridge. After the clue-search around the town, a nice walk takes you to the cache location. The terrain for the clue-search is 1 and walk to the cache 1.5 but I have given 2.5 for the retrieval (you will see why if you get there!)

Before you start this enjoyable challenge, I need to point out that the path leading to the final hide is currently closed. The path beyond Ruskins View is closed as some bright spark in H&S at the Council thinks that the whole hillside is about to be swept away by the river undercutting the bank. The barriers put in place are surmountable but not recommended. Access to the cache can still be made by walking from the road leading to Holme Farm towards Underley Park (about 1Km north of the town on the Old Town Road. Kirkby Lonsdale is blessed with an amazing number of pubs. They all have a character of their own and serve great food and drink according to your taste and pocket. What's more they are all within easy walking distance of each other. Of course, you don't have to go into any of them to be able to find the cache, but after you have completed the challenge, you should have a good idea of which one you would like to visit in order to (hopefully) celebrate your find. They are all family friendly establishments and I have not even included The Royal Hotel, right in the centre of the town (re-opened in 2010) nor the Royal Barn (opened in 2017) giving an even greater choice. In order to find the cache you will need to answer a simple question relating to 7 of the hostelries and then do a bit of arithmetic. Kirkby Lonsdale is a compact town and I will leave you to locate them yourself. If you get stuck you can ask one of the locals who will point you in the right direction. In no particular order: The Sun: A - How may Pillars are holding up the front of the building? Avanti: B - What is the street number of the pub? (you may need to google this one as the numbers have recently been removed from the entrance to the establishment). Snooty Fox: C - How many spikes are hanging down above the front entrance? Red Dragon: D - How many floodlights below the gutter at roof level? Orange Tree: E - How many oranges are perched on top of the sign? (remember this is a pub crawl and you are looking for the pub and not the 'sandwich-board', which is often propped up opposite the sun!) Platos: F - How many grapes in the bunch on the sign? (Careful not to include the leaf) Kings Arms: G - Which King? (the number and not the name) The final cache is located at N54 12.X W002 35.Y Unfortunately, as you can see, the last 3 digits of the lat (X) and long (Y) are missing. Let's see if we can find them. First the Lat (X): Multiply E x F x G (oops - too much) Try subtracting D x C from this (now it's too small) Now add on A + E (I think you have it now and your answer should be X. Now the Long (Y): Multiply B x F (oops - way too much) Try subtracting E x G x F from this (now it's too small) Add on C x F (nearly there) Add on G (I think you have it now and your answer should be Y. Now enjoy the short walk to the cache (look out for muggles at the cache location - this is a popular walking area) and enjoy your chosen post-caching refreshment.
