On May 1, 2000 the announcement that Selective Availability would be switched off was made.
On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time Selective Availability was switched off.
On May 3, 2000 Dave Ulmer initiated the "Great American GPS Stash Hunt" by hiding a black bucket with items inside including videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a logbook and pencil. He then posted the coordinates in an internet GPS users' group.
Within three days, two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container, and shared their experiences online.
And with these humble beginnings our sport was born!!
