Geocache Description:

Zoushigaya Old missionary pavilion

It is what the order and American missionary's John Moody McCaleb coarsely built [ga] valley old missionary pavilion as an own house in 1907. McCaleb lived for 34 years until returning home to (1941) in 1941 in this house. It is the oldest modern Kizukuri European style construction of the in existence in Toshima Ward, and the very valuable as missionary pavilion of the very few Meiji era period one also in Tokyo.

This building is a construction house of total two wooden floors, the entire design is single styles, Carpenter Gothicism is used for the design of the detail, and a simple foreigner house where the trait of the American suburbs house of the latter half of the 19th century was copied.

It is specified for a Tokyo specification and material cultural asset.

HOURS: 09:00-16:30
Closed: Year end and new year the next day of holiday on the third Sunday on Monday every week (opening a library in case of holiday)

雑司が谷旧宣教師館は、明治40年にアメリカ人宣教師のJohn Moody McCalebが自らの居宅として建てたものです。John Moody McCalebは、昭和16年(1941)に帰国するまでの34年間この家で生活をしていました。豊島区内に現存する最古の近代木造洋風建築であり、東京都内でも数少ない明治期の宣教師館として大変貴重なものです。
