Geocache Description:

Kings Island, Anoka CITO

Saturday, May 15. 8am to 1:30pm

UPDATE 3/23: added photos

Located on the Mississippi River just west of the Rum River confluence, Kings Island is a hidden gem amongst the parks of the City of Anoka. With little public access, it boasts deer, birdlife, and an interesting natural habitat. Unfortunately, the area has also suffered some abuse at the hands of dumpers, illegal campers, as well as deposits of river flotsam.

Additionally, there remain the remnants of the island's earlier use for grazing, in the form of fences that crisscross sections of the island.

Let's restore the beauty of the area. There is something for everyone, from basic trash pickup, to removing fence wire, to assisting with large item removal.

City of Anoka is providing gloves and other equipment, and are considering having a track vehicle on site for hauling larger items such as dumped refrigerators. They will be handling the trash hauling away from King's Island.

Additional details to be made as event approaches. Check back later.

Tentative Schedule of Events:

Cleanup: 8am to Noon
8:00 AM - Meet and greet at the designated parking area.
8:30-9:00 AM Head out to the different zones to cleanup.
If you arrive after 9:00 AM, you are still welcome! The organizers may be out in the park. Grab bags/gloves, and hit the trail.
Around noon - Return to trash dumpster, for a group photo with trash, before heading off to the lunch site.

Lunch: Noon to 1:30 Held at a nearby park shelter.
Noon: Pot Luck Lunch.

The event page coordinates are for check-in and parking. This is not a sealed parking lot, but a grass clearing off Highway 10. A sealed parking lot is across Highway 10 at the community college. This however will require a dash across Highway 10 during busy traffic, or a longish walk down to the crossing and back along the other shoulder. Take care if you chose these options.

There are several permanent caches located in the park, as well as a nearby benchmark. There will be new caches published in association with this event.

Attendance notes

I would like to know a good estimate of attendance for the day, so that I can inform Anoka City of the numbers for equipment needs. Please:

1. State intent, and number of attendees.
2. What your preference for cleaning up is... trash pickup, large item removal, fence wire removal.
3. Whether you would like to contribute a new cache hide/s to be released in association with the event. If you would like to hide a cache in association with this event, please let me know, as well as the reviewer when you publish the cache. These caches should be adjacent to the Highway 10 corridor, extending to Elk River, or generally within a six mile radius of King's Island on the North/East side of the Mississippi River.

The reviewer gave this guideline:
Regarding the submission of the new caches, people can submit them whenever they want. I'll review and disable the listings, instructing the owners to re-enable them when they are ready to have them published, no sooner than the evening before the event. I will not promise that the caches will be published at a specific time but will do my best to accommodate such requests.
