In this historic town in Northwest Florida with 250 buildings listed in the national historic register, there was one lady that really stood out.
Her name was Rubye Burton.
She was the first woman to own a gas station and went by the name of Bubba. Rubye recognized the need for fuel in the Grayton Beach area and would take the oil trucks onto the ferry to bring the fuel out to this area. Rubye spoke to a doctor riding around in his Model Ford and asked him if he thought there would be any more of these coming out there. He replied the he was sure there would be. She was once again the first to do this.
At the time Gulf Oil did not allow women to own a fillin' station, anywhere! Well Rubye out smarted them for a time anyway. Later, Gulf Oil got suspicious and sent out a rep. Well Rubye ended up marrying him! The rest is history.
She was a proud lady and her family remembers her fondly.
They built a memorial on the lake she loved so much from the children she loved so much.
