Military Canal - Rye Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SecretFive: We had a walk along to check on this cache this morning.
Sadly it looks like it has gone.
There used to be a wooden fence, which reading previous logs looks like it has been vandalised & removed. I guess the cache has gone at the same time.
We did have a good search all around the wider area but sadly no luck.
Very sorry that there was a Trackable listed as being in the cache, I have marked this as missing.. [:(]
Thank You to all the cacher's that have visited this cache over the past few years.

Geocache Description:

Follow the Saxon Shore Way public footpath from Rye towards Stone in Oxney.
Please be aware that at one point you will need to follow the footpath down onto the lower river bank to pass under the railway line. *This may not be possible if there is a very high tide.* Although for most days this will not be a problem.

The walk starts along side the River Rother. This leads on to the Royal Military Canal. The scenic route this canal takes is perfect for walking and cycling. Dug by hand in the early 19th century, the canal was designed as a defence barrier on the low-lying land between Winchelsea and Hythe. The canal is now used by the Environment Agency to manage water levels across much of the marsh and is vital to the area's flood protection. Today the full length of the canal has a public footpath along it and makes an excellent way-marked trail with numerous interpretation panels.  The canal is also a haven for some of the special wildlife of the Romney Marsh; kingfishers can regularly be seen and during the summer the canal comes alive with hovering dragonflies and noisy marsh frogs.

The cache is a 450ml clip lock plastic container, containing log book, pencil & FTF certificate.
Cache also contains tealight, small bag of polished stones, post it notes, apple eraser & football notepad.

* The walk to the cache is along the bank of a river, please ensure children & dogs are closely supervised*

Beware of the stinging nettles. Gloves may be needed at certain times of the year.

*Under the bridge can get a bit muddy in the winter & after heavy rain...*
