This cache is just before the kid’s play area, if you are starting at the Denstone end of the trail. The clue is in the name! There is an information board about the history of the area.
Muggle activity will be high at times, so stealth will be needed for this one.
This is a cache series currently standing at seven. It is between Denstone and Alton, along the Churnet Valley Trail. This is locally known as the Denstone Trail. The series can be completed from either end of this approx 2.5mile trail.
You can park at Denstone Village Hall - co-ordinates: N52 57.799 W001 51.167, or in Alton at the following co-ordinates: N52 58.886 W001 53.617
The footpaths for this series are generally firm compacted stone. They are in good condition, but unpaved, and there may be some steeper inclines to reach some of the caches. The minor trails can be wet and muddy. The tree cover even in winter is quite dense, so don't rely 100% on your GPS.
This walk will take you along the side of the river Churnet and in place cross areas of what remains of the Uttoxeter Canal. This was a 13-mile extension to the Cauldon Canal, which opened in 1811 and was shut in 1845. Most of the route was then replaced by the railway line, which ran from Uttoxeter to Macclesfield. The line was closed during the Beeching Axe of the 50’s and 60’s.
F.T.F Honours goes to shropshire seekers. Congratulations.
