Geocache Description:

FRANCAIS

EMBRUN - Les radeliers

ENGLISH

Denis Furestier tells the story of the extinct trade of the ‘Rafters’ (Radeliers) set on the river Durance. These men built wooden rafts and sailed the 260 km navigable stretch of the river from Guillestre to the Rhône. They were instrumental in the French wood transportation industry. Wood was the most widely used material until the end of 19th century and was key to the economy, defence and society.

The reservoir of Embrun is fed by water from the Durance and is located at the entrance of the lac de Serre-Ponçon. The walk along the dyke between the river and the reservoir can be enjoyed all year round. It is a beautiful place for a romantic walk, to go running, fishing or simply to stop and skim a pebble across the lake.

The cache is between the lake and the river.
