Una antica torre della cinta muraria di Pisa.
An ancient tower of the city walls of Pisa.

La Torre di Santa Maria è la più nota delle torri dell'antica cerchia muraria di Pisa, poiché chiude il lato nord-ovest delle fortificazioni presso la celeberrima Piazza del Duomo. La sua costruzione risale al 1155-1161. Essa si presenta strettamente connessa con la struttura delle mura: lo stesso materiale tufaceo del primo lotto orizzontale del tracciato lo ritroviamo utilizzato per il paramento murario della torre che, presenta conci di panchina grandi alla base e più piccoli via via che si innalza. Questo fatto dimostra l’esistenza di due momenti pertinenti alla stessa fase costruttiva. Nella torre di Santa Maria al momento della costruzione vennero già predisposti, sul suo lato orientale, gli "ammorsi" per il prolungamento del tratto murario. A partire dal 1157, con la pietra calcarea di San Giuliano, si continuò la costruzione della parte settentrionale della struttura difensiva, dalla torre di Santa Maria fino alla porta di Santo Stefano, partendo proprio da quegli "ammorsi" posti di fianco alla torre.
La torre di Santa Maria dovette conservare un’altezza modesta fino alla sopraelevazione in breccia sedimentaria di Asciano, materiale che venne utilizzato per il rialzamento della cinta muraria a partire dal 1261.
Nel 1499, durante il terribile assedio fiorentino, come tutte le altri torri della cinta anche questa fu sbassata all’altezza delle mura e venne rialzata solo intorno alla metà dell’Ottocento, epoca cui risale anche il coronamento merlato in laterizio.
Questo angolo del Duomo ci ha sempre affascinato, da piccoli ci piaceva passare dalla porta sotto la Torre (oggi purtroppo chiusa), ed entrare nella Piazza del Duomo nel prato di fronte al cimitero ebraico, era una zona sempre poco frequentata e un pò "misteriosa", almeno ai nostri occhi...ora che siamo ormai cresciutelli, abbiamo voluto premiare quest'angolo di Pisa con una cache, che speriamo apprezzerete.
La cache è un tubetto cilindrico, nascosto in un buco nel muro vicino alla Torre. Manca la penna. Buona caccia !!

The Tower of Santa Maria is the most known of the tower of the ancient city walls of Pisa; it close the north west corner of the city walls, near Piazza dei Miracoli. Its construction started in 1155-1161. The tower of Santa Maria is closely linked to the city wall structure : the tufaceous material used for the first horizontal lot of the city wall is the same used for the construction of the face of the tower, which similarly presents "panchina" ashlars that are larger on the lower part and smaller and smaller while raising up. This is also a proof that the building phase had been conceived in two different moments. On the east side of the tower of Santa Maria the "toothings" for the extension of the city wall had already been planned at the time of its building up. The construction of the northern portion of the city wall stretching from the tower of Santa Maria to the Door of Santo Stefano was carried on after 1157 using the calcareous stone of San Giuliano, starting right from those very "toothings" situated on the side of the tower.
The tower of Santa Maria had probably a limited height till the time of its further raising, for which Asciano sedimentary breccia was used - a material also employed from 1261 on to raise the city wall.
In 1499, during the terrible Florentine siege of Pisa, the defensive towers were cut at level of the city wall. The tower was raised again in the second half of the XIX century.
This corner of the Dome ever fascinate us; when we were childen we liked to pass through the door under the tower (now closed) and enter in the square, on the grass in front of the ebraic cemetery; it was an unfrequented area, and a bit "mysterious"...for our minds, at least. Now that we are a bit more aged, we want to reward this point of Pisa with a cache, and we hope you can like it.
The cache is a little cilyndric tube, hidden in a hole in the wall near the Tower. There is no pen inside. Good hunt !!!
