Geocache Description:

This cache is located a short climb up from Castle Combe village. It involves a walk of around 1/2 mile, down and up hill, from the official car park. Muddy after wet weather. The cache is NOT IN THE WALL. This is one of the oldest caches in the UK.

Castle Combe has been voted the prettiest village in England on several occasions, most recently by "Beautiful Britain" magazine in the USA. It has been used as a filmset repeatedly since Doctor Dolittle (1966), more recently Harry Potter and "War Horse" (filmed in 2010, check out some entertaining logs during September 2010). It is located at the southern end of the Cotswolds which is reflected in the Cotswold stone buildings.

Castle Combe gets very busy in the Summer but is just as nice on any dry day (crisp mid-Winter is my personal favourite) and you can get warm again in the Dolittle bar of the "Castle Inn". If you want more than a bar snack then try the "White Hart Inn" at Ford village, just a few miles away. This has been voted best pub restaurant several times and the range of beer is excellent if someone else is driving (Chippenham station is just a few miles away, one hour from Paddington).

Castle Combe is also well known for its Motor racing circuit which is a mile towards Chippenham. You can watch races from F3 to Historic, go Go-Karting, Skid car training, or even visit Steam rallies or Craft Fairs. More information is available at this web site.

You may be able to park on the road into the village out of season.

Please check out the Geocaching Association of Great Britain offering support for Geocachers in GB.

If you are accessing this cache from the village then walk under the arch with the unfriendly "Private" and in smaller letters "public footpath". You can't access the cache from inside the grounds of Castle Combe Manor Hotel (although you will get frustratingly close)! You are looking for an Ammo box near the view across rooftops to the church.
