Geocache Description:

The Lowcountry Geocachers will be conducting a cleanup event of the Edisto River beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 15, 2010. We have scheduled this event to coincide with the Friends of the Edisto (FRED) Stewardship Day.

We will meet at the coordinates above to sign in and distribute supplies. This year, we will be in charge of cleaning up parts of the Edisto River watershed, where highways cross Four Holes Swamp. As part of the Edisto River watershed, the Four Holes Swamp drains the area between the Edisto River and Lake Marion to the north and between Orangeburg and Ridgeville to the east. The Four Holes Swamp empties into the Edisto River upstream from Givhans Ferry State Park.We will be in charge of cleaning the crossings at US Hwy 78, a.k.a. Minus Bridge; Horse Ford Rd. (SSR 56), a.k.a. Horse Ford Bridge; and Wire/Ridge Rd. (SSR 19), a.k.a. Harleys Bridge. The individual coordinates are listed below. The litter is on the banks of the swamp or trapped out in the water behind logs or stumps. There are a few safe places to launch a kayak or canoe. Supposedly, one can paddle from the Minus Bridge downstream to the Edisto River passing under Horse Ford Bridge and Harleys Bridge on the way.

Minus Bridge N33 08.550 W80 21.100
Horse Ford Bridge N33 05.250 W80 22.830
Harleys Bridge N33 03.380 W80 24.260

After the clean up, you are invited to a good meal and fellowship at the SCGA May Meeting at 1:00pm at the Colleton County Recreation Center. After the meeting, a few brave souls will attempt the devilish Wildfire Challenge.

FRED is a small group of citizens focusing on preserving the quality of water and habitat of the Edisto River watershed. FRED cannot clean the entire watershed, so they ask volunteer groups to hold cleanup events throughout the year. In the previous 6 years, geocachers have helped clean stretches of the Edisto River and the boat landings that provide access to the Edisto River. The Edisto River is part of the ACE BASIN, which is comprised of the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers, where numerous caches are hidden.
