ULVA
A world apart
One of a series of caches placed on Ulva during 2010, to celebrate 10 years of geocaching.
Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving community of fewer than 20 people who are involved variously in sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism.
Ulva is an invigorating island, with a splendid atmosphere and scenic views. While it may seem, on arrival, that the island is swamped beneath bracken, the reality is that the flora and fauna here is remarkable, and offers a wide range of flora habitat that in turn produces more than 500 species of plants, many of which, like Grass of Parnassus and Devils’ Bit Scabious, contrive to flourish in open patches amid the heather late into September.
The island has been designated an Environmentally Sensitive Area for Argyll and the islands, as well as a national scenic area.
The cache is placed near a pointed standing stone, but there is no need to enter the field where the stone is. The cache is best approached from the Ormaig path, above it; if you attempt it from the lower, Gometra path, although you can cross or circumvent the fences, you could experience difficulty. Take the long way round, but beware of high seasonal bracken, and ticks.
You get to Ulva by ferry from mainland Mull (foot passengers only, and mountain bikes), Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm (0900-1700) on demand; also open Sundays from 1st June to end of August, but closed all day Saturday.
