Geocache Description:

This small fort on the south coast of the island, was erected in the final Section XVI at the role of protecting the village and bay of Dog Face, southeast of the island of frequent attacks by corsairs and pirates. It was a small fort, whose walls were opened six gunboats. Abandoned in 1892 its dependencies were transferred to Civil Government from Ponta Delgada to be used as lazaretto. During the Second World War, it housed a garrison, having been in concrete works. It is now abandoned and in ruins. The forts of St. Francis Xavier and St. Cajetan sought with your crossfire defend the sand of the Dog Face: "From a military standpoint, this small bay was to have a significant importance in the defensive system of Ponta Delgada, because the city found itself helpless in your rear spring for any landing place in the sands of the Dog Face, which were virtually contiguous and it is located only half a mile " Riley, Carlos Guilherme; Castles of Sand, Beach militia and the defense system of the bay of Dog Face Here we can admire the next set of sculptures by the sculptor nippon Minoru Nizuma dedicated to volcanism, seismicity and basalt.
