Data do século XVI a primeira referência à existência de cães de fila nos Açores, nomeadamente na ilha de S. Miguel. O facto das ilhas açorianas terem uma propensão natural para a exploração pecuária de gado bovino, conduziram à criação de uma raça canina especialmente dotada para a faina de conduzir e defender este gado. Ainda que os cães hoje existentes descendam de exemplares de mastins e alões levados do continente pelos colonos desde o tempo do infante D. Henrique e posteriormente tenha sido introduzido sangue dos ingleses Mastiff, Bulldog e Dogue de Bordéus francês, resultado dos contactos marítimos com estes povos, existe hoje uma raça bem definida com características morfológicas e temperamentais muito concretas. Usado essencialmente na condução do gado bovino leiteiro que existe no arquipélago, é interessante ver a forma como mobiliza um animal.

Date of the sixteenth century the first reference to the existence of dogs queue in the Azores, particularly in S. Miguel. The fact of the Azores have a natural propensity to farm cattle, led to the creation of a canine breed specially fitted for toil to lead and protect this livestock. Although the dogs that exist today are the offspring of copies of hounds and aloes brought by settlers from the mainland since the time of Prince Henry has been introduced and subsequently blood of the English Mastiff, Bulldog and Dogue de Bordeaux French, the result of maritime contacts with these people, there is now a race with well-defined morphological and temperamental very practical. Used primarily in the conduct of dairy cattle that exists in the archipelago, it is interesting to see how it mobilizes an animal.
