Say hello to the trolls' children playing right next to the Ring Road.
Tröllabörn meaning trolls' children is Icelandic folk name for hornitos. There are about 10 of them in this area, all 4,500 years old but you can search for more further in the lava of Leitahraun. This lava flow was produced during eruption of Leiti shield volcano, which is located east of Bláfjöll mountain range. During this eruption lava was running towards sea in both directions to Reykjavík and Þorlákshöfn. Many caves and lava tunnels were created. Where volcanic gasses managed to escape through the ceiling from the developing tunnels, those hornitos appeared.
How hornitos are created step by step:
When lava flows further from a volcano it cools down and the uppermost part gets stiff. However the lava keeps running under it creating tunnels and caves. Together with hot lava volcanic gasses are kept underneath the hard surface. Time to time those gasses get accumulated and manage to escape out through the solidifying ceiling which is ripped out and hot lava from beneath is splashed out and accumulated close to this opening. As the lava petrifies, it sits down closing the original tunnel under it and a hornito is created.
Please, keep in mind that this is a protected area and that Icelandic nature is very sensible.
You do not have to remove any stones nor moss to find this cache.
For your own safety use the recommended parking place and do not stop your car at the Ring Road.
